bridging the bay to close the digital divide
Ralph Smith is a quiet guy. He doesn’t boast. Nor does he talk about making omelets before he’s gathered eggs.
So it’s no surprise that Smith, the director of Computer Mentors, a group he organized about 10 years back to help bridge the digital divide in Tampa, didn’t reveal that a new Computer Mentor site was on the horizon in St. Petersburg when he talked to Sticks of Fire in late July.
But thanks to a grant of $25,000 from the Verizon Foundation, the new cross-bay lab will open Monday, Aug. 20, at 1123 22nd St. S. in St. Petersburg.
Initially, classes will be offered only Monday evenings for students 14-18. The goal is to offer adult instruction on Saturdays in a couple of months.
Camille Williams, a manager with Verizon, is the volunteer site coordinator.
Smith deserves great credit for getting this new site up and running.
