Michael Hinman of the Tampa Bay Business Journal reports that Trump Tower Tampa is moving forward again. I won’t believe it until they at least remove the weeds that have grown all over the site since construction was stopped.

Isn’t is a little late in the housing bust to even consider lifting this monstrosity to the skies?

Oh boy, just what we need — more condos!

Boy, somebody really wants you to turn off comments.

  3. Meredith Says:

Clarification: Not aimed at your comment, Vince. I meant the pingback spammer monkey.

Ha! You know, back in the mid 90s when I told people spam was someone’s “conspiracy” to force restrictions on net communication - like turning off comments at blogs, most people raised an eyebrow. Now it seems that there’s some cognizance that in fact some people employ this technique. I don’t know if I’m ahead of my time or just naive for theorizing on the obvious. ;)

Anyway, the Trump Tower may be condo overkill, but I’m going to remain optimistic that it will at least serve as capacity when the core hits some residential critical mass. Someday. I prefer to ask what we need another vacant lot for, or another empty urban street; not why we need another condo. :)

There is no reason to be optimistic about this project… It’s an overpriced project not directly linked to trump (only by name). The units are overpriced for the market and doesn’t really reflect the areas housing needs… Oh, and the building is a monstrosity at a location where it reigns over the glass towers that make Tampa’s skyline beautiful.

What’s next? Are we going to be told Pinnacle Tower is still possible? Or that the Hillsborough River Tower is imminent? Two more ugly buildings long in the public sphere with promises they will happen — even if there is no chance in hell for either of them.

  6. Dave Says:

It’s quite possible from an execution and design standpoint the project isn’t perfect. I wish all projects I was optimistic about were ideal. Its association to Trump is almost irrelevant, however - though I’m sure the investors feel differently. That’s really an issue for them to lose sleep over, not Tampa. The fact that it is another high density residential project is the *actual* value issue at stake for us.

I won’t argue all your points because there may be some merit to some of them - particularly where affordable housing is concerned. But, to me, it’s the outcome as a residential district that’s critical, as opposed to emptiness, and it isn’t a disaster for Tampa that another such haven comes to fruition to counter that possibility.

David, suggesting the association with Trump is almost irrelevant contradicts a lot of what you have written on TampaRail.org — you saw this as a boon to help the Trolley move north. You wrote that you thought Trump himself would pay for an expansion of the Trolley to where TTT was projected to stand and what not. It’s a ultra-high-class market that the building is aiming for and these aren’t your ever-day mass transit users… Let alone would Trump or SimDag lobby for a Trolley expansion anywhere near the building…

  8. David Pinero Says:

What I mean is that the reality of Trump’s flimsy association doesn’t deter from the value of the project as a residential magnet - if it gets done anyway. The reality of his loose association with it vis a vis a mere licensing agreement doesn’t deter from the fact that it is still a positive residential project, furthering those objectives embraced philisophically by TR.

If the fact that he merely licensed his name is not stopping the project, then, yes, it’s irrelevant. There are certainly stronger arguments for demonizing it than how indirectly he’s involved (when you think about it, were any of really surprised to learn it was more a branding stunt anyway?). None that nullify it for me personally, but that’s just my position.

It’s great to see sites like Sticks of Fire know more about journalism than any television station (or daily paper). I was wondering how this story broke, and found out right here as always, while all the other media outlets just pretend they came up with it themselves.

    Great job, Sticks!

Trump Tower is a Great Thing to enhance our relations with China.

By the time the footers for this thing are done, they will probably reach China giving Tampa direct communication with them. What a great opportunity for building International business.
