can usf compete for the national championship?
A month ago only a lunatic would have asked this question. But then again, a month ago the Bulls weren’t ranked fifth overall.
There are typically two things a team has to do to play in the BCS Championship game: 1) go undefeated and/or, 2) lose only one game and play in the SEC. Since there is no way USF can accomplish the second part, the Bulls have no choice but to win the rest of their games.

@ Rutgers
@ UConn
Cincinnati
@ Syracuse
Louisville
@ Pittsburgh
Cincinnati and Rutgers should be the biggest roadblocks for USF, especially the Bearcats who are also undefeated and ranked (#15). Other than those two the rest of the Bulls schedule is middling, which may end up being the biggest obstacle for the Bulls.
If USF had the reputation of Notre Dame or Ohio State then they could play this weak of a schedule and still get the Big Invite. But in the established order of college football pollsters are looking for reasons to discount the upstart Bulls. Even if the Bulls run the table they need three of the four teams above them to lose.
Honestly, I’m skeptical about the USF Bulls‘ chances to play in the BCS Championship game. Hell, I’m not even sold on their chances to win the Big East. In their two biggest games so far USF has played the role of underdog and has benefited from turnovers. It remains to be seen how they play against a good team when they are the favorites and aren’t winning the turnover battle.
