It has been a crazy college football season and it just got a little more unbelievable with the first release of the BCS rankings.

1. Ohio State
2. South Florida
3. Boston College
4. LSU
5. Oklahoma
6. South Carolina
7. Kentucky
8. Arizona State
9. West Virginia
10. Oregon

Even if USF goes undefeated the rest of the season the Bulls will have a tough time staying in the top two. BC will have the advantage of one more game against a good team in the ACC Championship. The same goes for LSU who has a stronger remaining schedule. As Florida proved last season it’s ok to lose one game as long as you lose early in the season.

The Bulls have another very important factor out of their control, preseason expectations. As SMQ sums up so nicely much of the college football establishment still does not consider the Bulls to be legit contenders to the throne. Fox football analyst Jimmy Johnson believes USF does NOT belong in the top five. Both sets of polls have BC ranked above USF despite a more impressive showing so far from the Bulls.

Jimmy Johnson’s a traditionalist jackass who can’t seem to understand the simple fact that you don’t need to establish yourself over decades in order to earn the top spot. As far as strength of schedule goes, USF still has potentially 3 ranked opponents to go. That puts them at 5 ranked opponents in a 12 game season. That’s a lot better than a lot of schools (including OSU and BC).

5 of the 6 computer calculations have USF as the #1 school. The only reason they’re not #1 is because too many people discount them for being too young. Hell, SI is running stories now about which one-loss school could get the national title, making it seem like a loss in the next few weeks for USF is a foregone conclusion. Why? because USC lost, and LSU lost, so therefore USF will probably lose: it’s the magic of this season!

    Whatever.

Point is, they can talk all the trash they want to. That’s fine. Except that if they can’t seem to get over the fact that schools like Miami and FSU don’t run things in Florida anymore, and that schools like USC and and OSU may indeed be overrated, then they can keep looking like the irrelevant talking heads they are.

    Go Bulls.

I am very proud of what USF has done but to be realistic about the situation The Big east is a very weak conference. If USF was in the SEC, Big 10, PAC 10, or Big 12 they would no get out of their undefeated. That is why it is so rare for teams in those conferences to go undefeated. If USF does make it to the championship game they will probably get killed just like the Miami Nebraska game a few years back. Its will be a blow out. Comment on the first response, I wish USF could play LSU or USC they would get killed. They can not match up to those teams. Im sorry but if they did win it would be a fluke just like the OU and Boise game.

    Hey Ray!

If the Big East is a “very weak” conference, explain the 5-0 record in bowl games last year.

Your comment gives the Bulls no credit - even if they win in your hypothetical.

Please come back and visit if the Bulls end up in any of the BCS bowl games. I’d like to give you the opportunity to change your mind.

Of course, next time you should leave an email address….

@Ray: You, sir, are the definition of a traditionalist jackass. Let’s breakdown your argument, alright?

    1) USC vs. USF: Considering USC has almost lost to 2 unranked teams AND lost to another unranked team, I think the term “Overrated” is applicable. They’re no longer dominant. Get over it.

    2) USF vs. LSU: USF’s defense has shown time and time again they can shut down the best offenses (remember WVU? They have 2 Heismann hopefuls, you know). LSU would lose that advantage in an instant. (And in case you’re wondering, so would Florida’s Tebow.)The game would be a defensive struggle, for sure, and considering LSU lost to Kentucky, USF beating LSU would by no means be an unexpected result.

    3) SEC, Big 10, PAC 10, or Big 12: You do realize that the Big East has 3 teams in the top 25, right? The SEC is the only one that surpasses that, with 5 teams in the BCS top 25 (including #22 Auburn, who USF beat on the road). Would they end up with a loss? Maybe. There are a lot of good teams there. You’ve got to face the facts: USF is a strong team, end of story. Sure, if they played nothing but the SEC, Big 10, PAC 10, and Big 12 all-stars, then yeah, they’d likely lose a game. So would — err, did — Oklahoma, so would — err, did — USC, so would — err, did — Florida. But no one has that schedule. Not even invincible LS– OOPS!

    4) If they make it to the Championship as they are ranked now, it would be against Ohio State, who has yet to play a ranked opponent. They would crush OSU. Period. In fact, the only reason OSU is #1 and not USF is because traditionalist jackasses who can’t believe that a school with a young football program and who started the season unranked could possibly be better than a school which had glory days once upon a time.

the point of all this: you’re stuck in the past, not able to face the fact that the sun has risen on another team, and that traditional teams aren’t doing as well as they were expected to. I wish people like you would get over yourselves.

It really is unfortunate we have the pre-season ranking system we do, because Ohio State has beaten absolutely nobody so far this year and is only ranked #1 because of their success LAST year.

  6. L Says:

Hey guys and gals did ya ever think the team that is the most prepared, the most determined and have the will and want to win more will win? It IS about what team shows up to the game ready to play. It does not matter their rank or what conference they are in……
You all need to stop putting the emphasis on the polls and the rankings.

  7. Gnorb Says:

*whispers to L* You know, that’d be great except for the fact that even IF the the team that is the most prepared, the most determined and have the will and want to win more wins, it’s their ranking which determines whether they’re allowed to have a shot at the national title. This is what happens when you don’t have a playoff system: opinions about who *might* be better than who becomes far too important.

  8. Meredith Says:

Gotta love the passion of these comments. :-)

    Go Bulls!

  9. L Says:

*whispers to Gnorb* Looks like Rutgers proved my point……
