Someone doesn’t care for a certain group of local young professionals. Check out this new website - emergetampabay.com

Welcome to the Scourge of Tampa Bay!

We are a pack of narcissistic do-nothings who demand attention. All we do is drink, it is our grand plan to support and lead the young professional community of Tampa Bay by keeping young professionals to drunk to notice the high cost of living, low paying jobs and lack of advancement. Plus we hope the drunks will accidentally reproduce and grow our local YP population. We are leaders because we say so and no one contradicts us. We desperately want to maintain the status quo and hope with docile obedience and generous ass kissing we can advance ourselves without having to work at it. Are you arrogant, lazy, and dumb enough to be part of Scourge Tampa Bay, the scourge of young professionals?

There is a group called Emerge Tampa Bay. Their website is http://www.emergetampa.com/.

ABOUT EMERGE TAMPA BAY

Emerge Tampa Bay is a leadership program of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce and the Clearwater Regional Chamber of Commerce designed for emerging leaders ages 21 to 35. The program concentrates on six main segments: TALK, VOICE, CONNECT, GROW, INTERACT and BUILD. Each segment is led by two Segment Co-Chairs, who report to the two Emerge Tampa Bay Program Co-Chairs that lead the program. Each segment’s mission statement and goals are listed under the Segments section.

That’s hilarious… and from what I hear, pretty accurate.

  2. Dave Says:

Domains By Proxy, a.k.a. Anonymous Cowards. Gotta love teh Intarwebs

  3. Eric Says:

    Aint it the truth!

  4. james Says:

Whomever wrote that is funny and smart. Since they remained the group Emerge Tampa Bay, they might be hunting for a new URL. I say the owner should sell the URL to the group for $25 K. The chamber can afford it.

  5. David Jenkins Says:

I agree with Tim, that feels pretty accurate and is usually gets supported every time I hear a story about the group. You know what they say - perception is most folks’ reality, even if it only take a few bad apples to spoil the whole bunch …

  6. Mr. Bill Says:

The main problem is “does anybody really care about this group at all ?”

    We think not.

  7. Eric Says:

Bill has a point, yet the main stream media insists on writing abut them every few months as if they were doing something worth mentioning.

  8. GKR Says:

Like many groups around Tampa Bay, “Emerge Tampa Bay” is merely a shell game supporting the dysfunctional status quo.

  9. tampafilmfan Says:

I don’t know anything about this group, but now that I’ve passed the 35 mark, I don’t like that so many local groups (the creative, networking ones focused on improving the TB area) have to have an age cutoff and be “young.” It’s like a creepy, local version of the movie “Logan’s Run.”

But then again I like Tampa and I like living here and don’t seem to see the same problems that lots of others do. And I don’t drink alcohol either, so it’s probably for the best that I’m too old to be invited.

  10. BB Says:

I remember the first Emerge meeting — it literally made my skin crawl. I hated the way they paired the chairs with “mentors” — as if young professionals need to be babysat. Then there was the whole Fraternity/Sorority vibe. Ugh… If you’re truly a professional, join professional organizations, not clubs with age limits. And not clubs owned by the Chamber — I absolutely agree that it’s nothing but a PR tactic to get media coverage.

  11. Geoff Says:

    Eric,

Sounds like a little professional jealousy that the media doesn’t give you as much attention

  12. Mike Says:

Emerge could use different ideas and various perspectives - instead of wasting your time whining about what you’re not part of or what you know nothing about, get off your lazy asses and come out to a meeting and see for yourselves. Or maybe you just enjoy life in front of a computer all day.

You might even meet some pretty girls there…just make sure you know what to do when you do!

  13. Meredith Says:

So the important values here are scoring press and scoring with chicks.

  14. Thanks Mike! Says:

Mike seems confused, he obviously agrees with the parody site as to the value of Emerge - scoring women and partying. The only supported for them to show up and he thinks skirt chasing and booze is a fine goal! Ha! Plus if you join they to will ignore your different ideas and perscpetives?

  15. james Says:

I have been involved in many YP groups over the years. If Emerge and the like are truly for the YP, then how come they have more social happy hours than pressing leaders on things like, the property taz and insurance issue, affordable housing, wages, transportation and planning? The real thing is the “good ole boys” just want pretty young people to sit there and make them look good. Most of the older men than go there are looking for the next trophy wife.

  16. Geoff Says:

James, I am sorry your perception of Emerge is so ill-informed. While the organization does host the “happy hour” crowd, it has also held forums since its inception that include issues like social security, health insurance, affordable housing (actually an on-going series), local and state political candidates, homelessness and hunger - and that’s just on the civic front. The organization has also hosted gift package bubdling for deployed military personnel, and annually hosts a back-to-school supply drive. Rather than basing 100% of your perspective on the negative, come to an event or two and decide for yourself.

  17. Geoff Says:

    Thanks Mike,
Indeed thanks. Perhaps many of you weren’t quick enough to pick up on Mike’s sarcasm of your hatred towards Emerge when he underscored your own petty insecurities as your motivation for hating an abstract program…if you don’t like it, don’t get involved. No one is forcing you to pay dues.

  18. james Says:

i have attended many Emerge events and what I have written is what I encountered. If Emerge is truly looking out for the young professionals, why does everything have to go thru the chamber? Why not stand on it’s own? Why have I not heard any news about Emerge rallying the YP’s to make some political noise about growth, the tax and insurance crisis, transportation,housing-the big issues that will effect this region and state for years to come? Geoff, I am serious show me and I will put out a public statement here on Sticks praising the group.

  19. Geoff Says:

James - the Chamber is able to provide Emerge with the resources to operate (i.e. staff time, corporate sponsorship). There are some YP programs I am sure who go at it on their own, but I’d venture to say few have the resources readily available to allow it to grow as far-reaching as Emerge can. Also, one of the base functions for Emerge is to develop leadership early in one’s career. Years ago the Chamber was criticized for being a “good ol’ white boy’s” exclusive group. Those days are long over. As the business community has diversified across racial, ethnic, and gender lines, why shouldn’t that same opportunity exist for younger professionals as well? If you can bring a different persepctive to the table, you make your organization that much stronger in the end. Emerge leaders have 2 seats on the Chamber board…that means they have a vote on guiding the Chamber in setting policy on the very issues you describe.

Also, I believe Emerge operates as a 501(c)(3) foundation, which limits its ability to be too politically active - the organization does, however, make every effort to present balanced and well-informed perspectives on the topics it chooses to address (i.e. the GOP and D perspectives on social security, or the free market vs subsidized role of providing health care).

  20. Yawn! Says:

Funny guys, critics should join to make it better, we welcome all, yada yada. Why should critics join, what makes you think the Chamber or Emerge is that relevant?

The activities you quote are discussions not action, action is relevant. The Emerge/chamber is not so central to this town that we all need to care what you do or not do.

Proper thing to do is ignore Emerge till they produce something worthy of this town. And no Geoff, having a few drinks and talking around the edges of issues like how to qualify or apply for a mortgage does not really address a housing issue for example. Plus talking without acting seems to be what you are being riduclued for. And your defense is that the group talks? It seems that the basis of the parody is being proven.

  21. Geoff's uninformed Says:

Geoff, Emerge Tampa is in the Florida State records as a Limited Liability Corp! So no worries about your charity status huh? And you are a comittee opf the Chamber so why would you have a 501C3 or LLC anyway, I was surprised by your statement and by what I found.

  22. Geoff Says:

    Dearest uninformend,

Perhaps it is you who are mistaken. The link above has NOTHING to do with the Emerge Tampa program of the Chamber. The filing is from June, 2007 - Emerge Tampa has been in existence since 2003; the address is Harbor Island. The Chamber is on Channelside Drive. To my knowledge there is no one employed nor affiliated with the Chamber by the name of “Irwin Julie.” - the link you sent is NOT the Emerge Tampa referenced in this blog.

To Yawn! - because not all actions are publicized, not all actions are known. Until you are privy to all of the meetings, convesations, decisions, actions, etc involved in the program, you have no idea what you’re talking about. The affordable housing seminars deal with everything from mortgaging and loan decisions, to what the development community is doing, to public incentives, to how one can get involved in all…maybe if you came to a meeting instead of spewing trash, you could comment intelligently on the subject. But it appears intelligence in general is lacking among many of you here.

And if you don’t need to care about what it is we do or do not do - why did you waste your time commenting here?!…pathetic

  23. Yawn! Says:

Geoff, seek therapy for your anger issues. Also I searched Geoff’s uninformed link, and while it could be wrong the state database of charitable organizations does not have Emerge Tampa. So you are not a charity, and you were not smart enough to buy your own website. I say the Scourge description must be correct.

So now Emerge is a unlisted Chairty operating in secret, that does not sound like leader rather then a krewe.

We are here stating our opinions, you know the opinions of the very people you are supposed to represent? You are here whining and behavubg like a scourge.

  24. Imitating Geoff Says:

An imitation of Geoff: ahm, goes olike this
“All who criticize us are disloyal, evil, stupid, and likely sexual deviants. Why will you people not worship us like you are ordered to! We are cool, our parents say so and everything. We demand to be loved and worshiped, how dare you question what little we do or how we do it. Dang-it! You pathetic losers! We are your leaders so why must you bother us with your thoughts! You are all pathetic, you are all bad mean people”

Geoff - you are proving your opponents correct.

  25. Geoff Says:

    Dearest Imitation,

All of my responses directly address the criticisms with fact. I have yet to see a single criticism based upon anything more than false perception.

Try logical reasoning for once instead of emotional blather, and you might finally begin to come close the level of my intellectual realm.

  26. Geoff Says:

    Yawn!

It operates under the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce Foundation…I would have hoped you could do some more research on your own without having to give you the answer, but I guess I expected too much…retard.

  27. Imitating Geoff Says:

Thank you for proving the Emerge bad attitude and problems.

  28. Geoff Says:

bad attitude huh? after multiple posts defending the program with facts, you will never be satisfied…so, continue your sad existence, talking about how much you hate Emerge to your little hearts content, expressing opinions that are so far from the truth its laughable, and watch it continue to grow and succeed despite your own blind anger and ignorance. The cream will always rise to the top, and the jealousy of those left behind will forever sour…

  29. Imitating Geoff Says:

As long as one Chamber emploee exists to write a press release you will be heralded as a success no matter what you really do, in secret as you said.

Thanks for the chuckes. Sadly the secret activities of your organization must be taking upso much of your time you simple post here again. Sadly somehow we will have to pick up our lives without your insights and leadership.

  30. james Says:

I must say for someone trying to convince me that I am wrong about Emerge, Geoff you have proven done a much better job than I could at proving my point.

  31. Geoff Says:

    Imitating,

If all the Chamber has to do is write a press release, maybe it indicates the stading if the organization as a whole.

James - I spend 3 posts defending Emerge on diplomatic terms and facts, yet was rebuked every time. By post #4 I lost my patience. That does not, however, change the fact that I was right.

  32. Imitating Says:

You guys all make me laughm, thanks for the entertainment. Now go, lpease don;t let us hold you from your secret duries at Emerge. All us retards adn rejects who have not accepted the Emerge way, that is what we have been callde, will have to busy ourselves without you. Go bnow and do those secret good deeds bno one knows about.

  33. chider Says:

Talking and conversing about social issues can be more important than action. What’s better? Successfully completing a couple of can drives or changing the mind of a future Bush or Chavez. Don’t knock the benefits of simple conversation, it moves more mountains than you would realize.

If you want action, join a misguided college group that would rather act without thinking than think without acting
