city to sell naming rights?

The city is thinking about selling the naming rights to the Tampa Convention Center.

“The Honda Civic Center” might work. I’m less sure about the “LazyDays RV Trailer Park and Convention Center.” But if someone comes up with “The St. Pete Times Convention Center,” there will be an uprising.

Selling convention center naming rights? That screams of the city/county funding rift to me. At least the concept of having to do it. “We need the money and can’t get the money”

There are too many names that don’t work and too few that do. I have to admit I laughed when Raymond James was announced as the naming rights winner for the Bucs stadium — but now it works because you don’t necessarily think of finance with the ballpark. Tropicana field though? Eh. St. Pete Times Forum? Blah.

“National Rental Car Company Convention Center”, “Starbucks Convention Center”, “Tech Data Convention Hall”… It doesn’t work….

Anyone want to wager how much Joe Redner offers to have the Convention Center redubbed the “Mons Venus CC”? :)
