major league redevelopment

The Rays have launched a companion site tied to their stadium efforts, entitled Major League Downtown. This, of course, is the Tropicana Field site redevelopment along with the new stadium construction on the site of Al Lang Field.

On a sidenote with all these renderings — ST. PETERSBURG everywhere you can see on graphics representing the new stadium. It’s nice when your resident pro sports team caters to your inferiority complex that people don’t know St. Pete is a city all in it’s own, isn’t it?

Regardless, it’s a pretty nice design but questions linger.. There’s more discussion on things likely to occur at Rays blog draysbay while certainly occuring at development forum SkyscraperCity.

Nice design? It didn’t work in Montreal at the Stade Olympic. Do they really think that sail is going to work now?

  2. John Says:

Chuck, the roof structure at La Stade Olympique (Olympic Stadium) in Montreal was Fiberglass. They weren’t aware it wouldn’t hold up under opening and closing or foldings.

Is it a law that all of our professional baseball stadiums must give the appearance of tilting?

    yawn

  5. Chuck Welch Says:

Actually, the fiberglass roof now on is the non-retractable one to replace the first one.

That one was “retractable” under 25mph winds and made of Kevlar fabric. And it ripped.

I think they shouldn’t even bother with a roof. Well, I think they shouldn’t even bother with a stadium in St. Pete.

    I have a better idea.

(Sorry about the stadium name spelling error. I was sleepy.)

Chuck, my understanding is that the fabric sails should be relatively cheap and easy to replace as needed.

Instead of downtown, why not the Carillon/Feather Sound area that would be much more easily accessible to Tampa residents?

Branding is not the same as an inferiority complex.

I have friends in NJ who still call where I live “Tampa Bay” - even though I’ve lived in 2 counties in 6 years - and it’s definitely because that’s how we brand our sports teams.

I don’t see much point in trying to change it myself, but whatever.

  8. The Carl Says:

It’s all a moot point. This stadium ain’t gonna happen if it depends on taxpayers. First referendum will result in a runoff between “no” and “hell no.”

Doesn’t Salt Lake City need a professional baseball team? Just another option for the Rays.
