mock dissecting the nfl draft: bucs pt. II
Few sporting events are as fashionable to over-hype as the NFL Draft. Since we here at the Sticks are slaves to fashion we plan on doing our part to hype this spectacle. Today we have a two part series, with part two covering the players the Bucs could draft.
Earlier today we looked at the positions of need for our Bucs, identifying three positions (pass rusher, receiver and cornerback) which could be drafted in the first round. Let’s take a look at who the mock drafts have the Bucs picking…
Don Banks, SI.com - DeSean Jackson
Dr. Z, SI.com - James Hardy
Vic Carucci, NFL.com - DeSean Jackson
Chris Stueber, Scout.com - Devin Thomas
Rock Stroud, SI.com Beat Writers - Mike Jenkins
Pete Prisco, Sportsline.com - Aqib Talib
Almost all the mock drafts I have seen lately have the Bucs drafting either a receiver or a cornerback, which makes a good deal of sense considering those are positions of need for the Bucs. Additionally, there are a number of prospects at those positions who will be available when the Bucs pick in the first round.
Mike Jenkins: We’ve already mentioned Jenkins as a possibility but there appears to be a stronger and stronger possibility that Jenkins is drafted by the Bucs.
DeSean Jackson: Out of all the receivers Jackson is the one I really hope the Bucs do NOT draft. Stewart Mandel, who actually watches college football, calls Jackson the most overrated receiver.
James Hardy/Devin Thomas/Limas Sweed: I’m grouping these guys together because they all fit the typical Gruden receiver type, tall guys with good speed. Hardy is the tallest of the bunch (6′6″) and along with Sweed is one of the best prospects of the bunch. Thomas is more ready to contribute as a rookie.
Mario Manningham: Mario is a guy I liked a bunch in college but it looks like he will fall out of the first round as he does not have the best physical skills. Along with Trevor Laws (defensive tackle of Notre Dame) I like Mario as a possible second round pick for the Bucs.
Aqib Talib: I would be amazed if Talib falls to the Bucs but if he does he will be playing in Tampa this season.
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie: DRC is a mid-major guy (Tennessee State) who is getting a lot of love. I know nothing about him.
Predicting the 20th overall pick is difficult and no mock draft had the Bucs drafting Davin Joseph with the 23rd pick two years ago. But I think it’s likely the Bucs will go defense with their first pick and draft a receiver in the second round. So with that in mind my prediction for the Bucs first round draft pick is…..
