i don’t hate the tampa tribune

I’ve been a season ticket holder of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since they played in the Big Sombrero. I have been attending Bucs games for over 25 years. That vested interest, and because I am a fan of the team, I sometimes second guess the plays they call, question the roster moves they make, and even wonder what they see in the coaches they hire.

But there is no question that I want the team to do well. As the NFL representative for the Tampa Bay area, I want them to be recognized as winners. I root for them just as I do the Rays, the Lightning, and the USF Bulls.

However irrational, winning sports teams seem to increase community pride. It makes perfect sense for us to identify with an entity that bears our community’s name. But they don’t always play well, and that is irritating. And when they are horrible, it’s absolutely infuriating.

But I don’t ever hate them. I only want them to do the best job they can do, so they represent our community well, and I can have some pride in the local hometown team.

Tommy sez: “I don’t hate the Tampa Tribune.”

Sounds like one of those old white guys down at the country club who starts a story by saying, “I’m not racist, but…”

I think I missed something … did the Buccaneers say you hated the Tribune? =P

I guess when it comes to things that are headed in teh wrong direction, I sometimes get the thought that the “village must be destroyed to save it”. Most of the time, the “village” is self destructing anyway with bad moves, bad choices, bad tactics, etc.

Be it the Bucs, the Bolts, the Rays, the Trib, the Times, etc.

It’s also easier to take pride in local entities as the aforementioned when hope exists. Hope and forward thinking. That’s part of the reason I have had such problems with the Bucs in recent years, and the problem I have had with Mother Corporate and the oversight of the Tamap Tribune. There is no future. It’s the now that needs to be made better. Not the long term.

I, too, do not hate the Trib! I wouldn’t rail against them if I didn’t care. And I sure as hell wouldn’t subscribe.

Does anybody think the Tribune will ever become a real newspaper as long as it is owned by (out-of-state)Media General?? Some days, reading what the Trib thinks is headline news, I am in despair.
