The Weekly Rays Update
Overall: 27-19
Last Week: NYY (3-1), St Louis (1-2)
This Week: @ Oakland, Baltimore
Normally this post runs early in the week before the first Rays series but work (bloggers have real jobs?) has kept me away from the computer. For convenience sake we will ignore the current A’s series until next week’s post.
Last week was a big week for the Rays as they have begun to receive some love from the national media. Everyone loves an underdog and in the AL East the Rays (2nd lowest payroll in MLB) have been the Washington Generals, Detroit Lions and Jamaican bobsled team rolled into one. But that has changed as this week’s SI cover illustrates.
Boston………….29—19 __ .604
Tampa Bay…..27—19 __ .587
Baltimore…….24—19 __ .500
Toronto……….23—24 __ .489
New York……..20—25 __ .444
This is uncharted territory in the AL East. Sure everyone expected Boston to be at the top, but the Rays in second in the division and leading the Wild Card race? That would have been crazy talk two months ago.
At some point we have to mention the ugly underbelly to this success, the lack of fan support for the Rays. As Tommy mentioned earlier in the week, the Rays have not been drawing fans to the stadium. You could argue that a new stadium would help change that, but let’s save that argument for a future date.
RAYS POST OF THE WEEK
This week’s honor is extended to Rays Index for their Vote or Die post. Mostly for the use of a well-endowed lady, something which is apparently frowned on by a few readers of this site. Anyway, go vote for Carl Crawford to start in the All Star game. Or die. (Your choice)
RAYS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Gabe Gross
Let’s continue the underdog theme by picking the backup outfielder who hit the winning RBI in the 11th inning against the once-invincible Mariano Rivera.
