best record in baseball!

The Weekly Rays Update

Overall: 31-20
Last Week: Oakland (2-1), Baltimore (3-0)
This Week: Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox

What has gotten into the (Devil) Rays? Last season the Rays had the worst record in baseball. Now they have the best record in baseball. How rare is this kind of turnaround? 1903 was the last time a team went from worst record to the best record after Memorial Day (that team was the New York Giants).

[Disclaimer: Apparently Memorial Day was later in the month in 1903.]

Tampa Bay…31—20 __ .608
Boston………….32—22 __ .593
Toronto……….28—25 __ .528
Baltimore…….25—25 __ .500
New York……..25—26 __ .490

Can they keep it up? Others may argue different but I don’t think they win the AL East. The Rays have benefited from home-cooking so far, with 28 games at home and 23 on the road. In their home games the Rays have a 20-8 record, but on the road they have a losing record of 11-12. Starting next week the Rays have a nine game road trip which should test the young team.

VOTE FOR CARL CRAWFORD TO START THE ALL STAR GAME

RAYS POST OF THE WEEK
This week our favorite post was from Rays of Light for their response to DRays Bay complaints about Matt Garza’s 7 1/3 shutout innings. We are in agreement with Rays of Light, let’s just enjoy a win for what it is, a win.

RAYS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Evan Longoria: .261, 2 HRs, 7 RBI (for the week)
Evan Longoria was on fire over the weekend with 2 homeruns on Saturday followed by a game winning walk off hit the next day. Now if only we could agree on a nickname for Longoria.

Hey Ski, trade in that Bucco Brucie for a Rays cap! Good seats still available on the Trop bandwagon. Come one, come all!

Carl, I got myself a Rays hat when I was in town for a spring training game. (I live outside of DC now).

I will have to switch the Bucco Bruce picture out for a Rays one. (And I will need a new DC landmark to throw in the back, any suggestions?)

People will start to come out to games as they realize we finally have a winner in our backyard. Rays have some of the cheapest tickets and are one of the most fan friendly teams around.

    Ski,

Just moved from Tampa to DC myself. Still have an old D’Rays cap, purple, old logo, and all (though my had got fatter and it won’t fit).

Been to the new Nats park yet? It’s a beauty. 35,500 showed up Sunday to root n the cellar dwellers of the NL East…wish the Rays could get that kind of crowd.

    Chris,

I have been to Nats Park and I am disappointed in the stadium. Sure it is nice and easy to get around (as opposed to RFK) but when compared to Camden Yards it falls short. Maybe that’s an unfair comparison but Nats Park lacks the character you can find at Camden.

I’ve already come up two nicknames for Eva. The first is “The Franchise.” Now, I know that baseball purists consider Tom Seaver as the one and only “franchise,” but that was 30+ years ago. It’s time to move on. The second nickname, is “The Living Legend” because of Eva’s clutch hitting ability. He’s up to what, four game-winning/walk-off hits already this season?
