Sheriff Grady Judd has changed the menu at Polk County Jail:

The new menu, announced with much fanfare Wednesday, substitutes crackers, frozen egg patties and water for cornbread, fresh eggs and a variety of beverages, and will save an estimated $195,000, Sheriff Grady Judd said. He said he hopes to eventually cut $200,000 from the jail’s food services budget.

Detractors are upset, since county jail holds those awaiting a trial, so some inmates may not even be found guilty.

I read that this morning - good for them - this is the kind of thing government ought to be doing more of - finding good ways to save budget in a tight enconomy. What does it matter if you are guilty or not - as long you are getting the right nutrition. If they made these budget cuts and a minimum nutrition level was not being met, then that becomes a problem.

Good for them, nice to see the government actually trying to save a little money. Like the guy above said, as long as they get the same nutrition. No one thinks about good food when they think about jail.

it seems like they are trying to improve the inmates diets while cutting costs, now if only they can find a promising way of rehabing the inmates also. a stronger body AND mind will hopefully make them a better person.

Jail in itself should be rehab. It should be such an awful experience, that once one spends time there, they will never go back.

It’s not our job to educate them or help them find jobs. They had that opportunity once - and blew it.

So sorry that some of us chose to finish school, work hard and obey the law, while others were simply lazy and worthless. Maybe one day they’ll learn.

Grady Judd talks a tough game but when it comes to a stone cold who dunnit, he and his men usually come up short. Example being the cyclist who was assaulted in broad daylight up there recently. Sheriff’s detectives appear to be doing nothing to aprehend the perps. In those situations, they usually wait for someone to turn themselves in.

I love the part about inmates pending trial who haven’t been found guilty of anything (except being too poor to post bail). Apparently, “probable cause” is all Sheriff Judd needs to treat you like an animal. It’s cliche, I know, but whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?

From a nutritional standpoint, it seems really lacking. They may be criminals (the ones convicted anyway), but they’re still human. A lot of those guys do work detail and crackers and powdered milk just won’t provide enough energy to get through those days. They may lose in health care expenses what they save in food spending.
