I’m sure you’ve already heard that your Hillsborough County BOCC voted 5-2 to rename the county’s Moral Courage Award after long-time local activist and money man Ralph Hughes.
According to articles in both the Tribune and the Times, only one person showed up to support the renaming of the award. Neither paper tells us how many people were opposed, but the Trib quotes three of them, and the Times talked to three others. But even in the case of six (or more) to one against them, your Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners showed that they are going to do just what THEY want to do.
To be sure, this is not the greatest threat to our quality of life. And in a county of 1,000,000 people, only a handful of citizens cared enough either way to show up. But still, when there is no other gauge, shouldn’t those citizens who took time out of their busy schedules be given due consideration?
Not according to these “leaders.”
Maybe they got thousands of emails in support of the award. But most likely commissioners just heard the echoes of years of campaign contributions.

I think one of the papers mentioned that 10 spoke against the renaming of the award, and one for.
Norman hopes having the Hughes family and puppets behind him will aid his future Senatorial ambitions.

OK, instead of doing the same mope and whine thing about stating what incompetent, inept, outlandish and heinious thing the BOCC has done once again, how about doing something constructive and talking about VOTING THEM OUT OF OFFICE?!?!
(This isn’t directed at you, Tommy, or anyone in comments. We can complain and complain but… Well, they’ve pulled a knife again, when are WE going to pull a gun?)

Pete Gifford — yeah, his web site may suck but are we going to accept the status-quo again, and again, and again?

I think the big changes are coming…as money evaporates, and people grow hungry, and angry…there will be far less tolerance for BOCC’s sell-out antics. The corrupt commissioners have written their legacies, and now they’re stuck with them, to shame their families for a long time to come. Call it dreaming, call it rhetoric, I don’t care. We can all sense big changes in the air, and I don’t mean Obama. I mean the feces striking the rotary oscillator for our economy, society, and government. BOCC is too arrogant to duck…

Meredith, county voters have a knack of voting against their own interests, I wouldn’t put it past them to do it again.

The only person speaking in favor of this idea as a “citizen” was former commissioner Joe Chillura. A sad day indeed but the puppets can and did pay tribute to their master.

Don’t get me started on Jim Norman and Ken Hagan(he never met a developer he didn’t like)….I refuse to vote for either of them since Hurricane Frances!

Tommy wrote something last year that I think needs to be reinforced in everyone… Something I tried to do in my previous comment:
What are you prepared to do? It’s one thing to voice disgust about the status-quo and it’s another to actually get involved in trying to change it. I know everyone is focused on the presidential election and some of you are volunteering for your political candidate in that race… But how many of you are involved in the local races? The BOCC races, the state legislative races, etc, etc, etc. Government at local levels are where the real changes start for our lives.
I know many of you will VOTE for the person running against an incumbent on the board, but what are you going to do before then to make sure others do the same instead of casting a vote for a familiar name that works against their interests time and again?
