rocco baldelli diagnosed, no one notices
ABC Action News anchor Wendy Ryan got an exclusive interview from Rays outfielder Rocco Baldelli, who confirmed a diagnosis of Mitochondrial Myopathy.
Mitochondrial Myopathy is a muscular disease, and the form that Rocco is dealing with makes physical exertion very exhausting. His muscles need a longer time to recover than most of us. There is no known remedy for the disease, but the Muscular Dystrophy Association is looking for a cure.
Brendan McLaughlin is surprised that neither of the daily papers picked up the story. Perhaps the news is hidden behind that big Magic Number.

Ummm … maybe because it’s not news?
It’s been common knowledge that Rocco suffered from a mitochondrial disorder that creates rapid muscle fatigue. In fact, that’s the reason he was listed on the DL at the time he was listed, and has been talked about by everyone — even Dwayne Staats and crew — ever since he returned.
Say what you want about the dailies, but even they know old news when they see it.

everybody knew it was a some type of Mitochondrial disorder, but nobody knew what exactly was causing it. if you watch the video you will see that Rocco talks about just finding out a “few minutes ago” that the cause is now known to be a form of Muscular Dystrophy.
this is big news.

Google Yahoo! News on 9/9/08, and they state there is mitochondrial myopathy. There also is a Times story from August that describes it as the same condition.
