how to better choose a candidate

October 15, 2008 | tommy | Leave your thoughts!

I’m sure you have seen the ads between Christine Jennings and Vern Buchanan. In her attacks, Jennings accuses Buchanan of all sorts of ugly wrongdoing. In response, Buchanan says that newspapers have refuted those ads as nonsense. In taking a closer look at all the allegations, Wayne Garcia calls all of them “bullshit.”

Advertising is great when used to promote a candidate’s positions, or even deride an opponent’s take on the issues.  Character assassinations – especially half-true or purposely misleading representations – are a waste of everyone’s time, and frankly it disrespects the intelligence of those who are interested in the race.

Unfortunately, it continues to work (or just drive people away), so candidates continue to employ them.  But there is a better way.

At the very least, we can go to their websites, which give us a great starting place to find what they want us to believe is important to them, and how they plan to address them.

For instance, check out Christine Jennings for Congress and Vern Buchanan for Congress.

After the jump below, I have listed (and linked to) each of the issues they include on their sites as of this morning. Not every topic in the list will be of interest to you.  So take a look at each subject, prioritize those that are most important to you, compare both candidates’ responses, and keep track of who’s views match yours most closely.  You can find out more by reading newspaper articles about your biggest concerns.  And then go VOTE!
