journalists now independent, blogging

Over at st.petersblog, Casey found a couple of former Creative Loafing staffers.

First, Alex Pickett has begun blogging at Will Report for Food:  Tales of an unemployed journalist.  A recent posts wonders why no journalist will ask SP Police Chief Chuck Harmon the tough questions.

Wade Tatangelo found a gig at the St. Pete Times, but is now also making sure he keeps track of all his stories by linking to them in his new blog, Wade Tatangelo.

Anthony Salveggi commented at st.petersblog to let us know he is keeping track of the latest journalistic trends at Virtualjournalist.

As for former Tribsters, we have found two now blogging.

Former editorial page editor of The Tampa Tribune Rosemary Goudreau founded ProCitizen Media, a “new-media company dedicated to exploring public-policy issues in depth from a citizen’s point of view.”

ProCitizen’s first act can be seen at Wrong Track 4 Florida, a site “dedicated to promoting public education, strategic thinking and good public policy as Florida addresses its passenger-rail needs, with a special emphasis on the pending deal with CSX Railroad.”

In a recent post, Rosemary points out that the Lakeland Ledger has YET to tell their readers about Senator JD Alexander’s conflict of interest in the CSX deal.  The story has been in the Tampa Tribune, but a google search shows nothing in the Ledger.

Ex-Tribune Reporter Billy Townsend has been writing for Metro I-4 News, and points out a couple of other conflicts in the CSX deal, too.

CSX will build the Winter Haven ILC even if the Orlando commuter rail deal is killed by the Legislature. So when Rosemary and Billy succeed in defeating the Sun Rail bill, the ILC will still be built and Orlando (and Tampa) will never have commuter rail or light rail.

I’ve been watching this CSX nightmare go on for over 2 years with no end in sight. All I see is more cock swinging, more backdoor politics and nothing getting done.

Hmmmm. Now who might “observer” be? I know most of the people I’m on a first name basis with. Anyway. Two quick responses:

1)With car sales down 40 percent and Florida’s population growth halted – likely for a longtime – let’s put $20 on whether the hub gets built if CSX gets no public money.

    2) Explain the scenario under which you see Tampa getting rail because of this deal. CSX won’t allow more passenger traffic on its lines east of Tampa, and if you commit to this deal, you’ve just allowed CSX to name its price and conditions based for access to the lines based on 2005 land values. There will never be momey or will to pay for it. This deal makes it much harder for TBARTA’s plan to work.

I like the way they tried to resell this booondoggle as a “jobs stimulus bill” for federal money.
