tribune fails geography

I am confused.

I read that James Rosenquist lost his Aripeka home to a fire, and thought it would be cool to highlight the famous artist and find out more about Aripeka, FL and the surrounding area.

I found a 2007 interview with Rosenquist at his Aripeka studios, along with some photos that give an idea of how big his studios were before the fire.  I learned that Aripeka is a small town on the coast, real close to the Pasco/Hernando border.

And then I stumbled across the TBO story – 80-acre fire in Withlacoochee forest contained:

… firefighters contained an 80-acre brush fire in the Withlacoochee State Forest’s Homosassa tract at the north end of Indian Bay.

Wait a minute – Homosassa?  In Hernando?  No it’s not.

The Homosassa tract of the Withlacoochee State Forest is between Chassahowitzka and Homosassa, both in Citrus County, which is 25 or 30 miles north of Hernando.  Meanwhile, the Weekiwachee Preserve is much closer to Aripeka, FL, in southern Hernando, where Rosenquist had made his home and studios.

It sure must be tough to defend newspapers when they can’t accuratley tell us where events happen.

If it was in Weekiwachee Preserve, it must have been in that small part on the west side of Shoal Line Blvd. I was biking the preserve all afternoon. I could see large plumes of smoke, but it was on the other side of the tree line from the trails. A helicopter was filling a firefighting bucket from the preserve’s lakes.

I spend a lot of time in local preserves and there’ve been a lot of fires in them lately, but nearly every newspaper article I’ve read can’t seem to figure out where exactly the fires were.

If you want to add timeliness to the discussion you will probably get a kick out of the blog article I published last week.

It highlights two glaring issues with both local dailies’ websites.

Newspapers and journalism should look back at browsers and music sharing.

It was the second of three articles I did critiquing the newspaper industry’s reluctance to change.

As long as you’re criticizing newspapers for making errors, consider the possibility of proof-reading your column so that you spell the word “accurately” – you know – accurately.

Otherwise it might get really hard to defend online blogs.
