There’s really no better reason to have a great time than to celebrate the birth of our nation.  And I don’t wanna harsh your buzz or suggest you shouldn’t party.  I just want you to be able to truly enjoy your hangover on July 5.

As we get ready to celebrate the Fourth of July, here are a number of things you may want to keep in the back of your head:

• The 4th of July is the day with the most crash deaths – based on a 2004 report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an average of 161 people die in crashes on July 4.  This is 12 more deaths than the average on any other single day of the year and about 40 percent more crash deaths than occur on an average day.  By the way, the second worst day for crash deaths during 1986-2002 was July 3.  July 2 made the top ten.
• More U.S. fires are reported on July 4 than on any other day of the year, and fireworks account for half of those fires.  Sparklers, firecrackers, and rockets are the leading contributors.  Hillsborough County Fire Rescue reminds us to be safe – Leave fireworks to the professionals.  Don’t let your kids pick up left over fireworks – they may still be active!  Also, it is illegal to discharge fireworks in Hillsborough County parks.
• Boating is great fun, too, but can also be deadly.  Boating accidents usually are caused by the operator’s inattentiveness.  Most boating accident fatalities are men, and most accidents involve a single vessel.

Again, it’s completely up to you if you want to drive to the boat ramp at 80 miles per hour, lighting off Roman Candles as you leave the dock.  Just remember that crazy stuff happens, and PAY ATTENTION to what’s going on around you – and pay extra attention to your kids.
