tampa is… death metal

You may not know it, but the Bay area has quite a history in producing Death Metal bands.   In fact, the St. Pete Times says Tampa is the birthplace of death metal.

“Iconic bands like Death, Deicide, Morbid Angel and Obituary — all of whom rank among the world’s top-selling death metal bands — came out of the Tampa Bay area in the early 1980s. Cannibal Corpse moved their home base from New York to Tampa just to be part of the emerging scene.”

Although I liked hard rock and some metal (I thought the stuff from Savatage was pretty good) I never did care too much for that death stuff. But I do remember Brandon’s Nasty Savage playing their own style of thrash metal back in 1982. They released four albums between ‘83 and ‘89.

From Orlando, the eventual “father of Death Metal” Chuck Schuldiner grabbed a couple of Tampa area musicians to form Death. These guys were regulars at Nasty Savage shows, and built on the NS sound, and sharing it with the world of Death Metal fans.

Although the local metal scene ain’t what it once was, you can still find Metal at the Crowbar, the Brass Mug, and a couple of other joints. Check Tampa Bay Metal Scene and Tampa Metal Alliance for the latest information. WMNF plays metal on the Psycho Realms show from 1 to 4am Mondays, and metal bands still head to Morrisound Studios for recording.

I was a big fan of Nasty Savage! I always wondered what happened to them.

It is great to see Tampa is the birthplace of a genre of music. After a visit to Memphis, I saw how a city embraces its artistic roots. Unfortunately, death metal isn’t exactly the most commercially viable. But you would think some one could capitalize on it somehow, maybe with a little humor or something.
