Every four years, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (aka FIFA) holds an international competition to determine the world’s best football team.
By the way, that’s international football – what we Americans refer to as soccer.
Like the Olympics, each FIFA World Cup is hosted by a different country each time. As with the biggest sporting events, hosting the World Cup brings plenty of worldwide attention and significant economic impact, and many nations lobby FIFA to be chosen to host the tournament.
As you may know, the United States is bidding on the 2018 (or 2022) World Cup. Tampa Bay is among 27 US cities under consideration to serve as a host city.
The USA Bid Committee has created a petition campaign to help show the level of dedication our nation has to host the tournament, and each city has a set goal of 50,000 supporters. Those cities with the most support may be chosen to host a round or two.
