Tampa chief of staff Darrell Smith says “red light running is a real problem in the area and we believe that if there’s an opportunity to alleviate that problem we should explore it.”
So public works and utilities administrator Steve Daignault says the City of Tampa is “in the process of studying the effectiveness of” red light cameras.

It’s about time. You can never take a green light for granted in this town.

Translation: Tax revenues are down and we need new income streams! There is plenty of information out there showing these cameras are ineffective. This is a cash grab, plain and simple.

Revenue racket. Causes more rear-enders than it saves t-bones.

That was the first thing I noticed about Tampa. I’ve witnessed several gruesome wrecks because of red lights being run. I feel like out of the places I’ve been, Tampa is the one where this would help the most.

Red light cameras do not cause accidents. Drivers who fail to follow the simple procedures and laws governing the operation of a motor vehicle cause accidents. IF there is a correlation between an increase in rear-end collisions and the installation of red light cameras, I would be willing to bet the data indicates the trend declines over time, as behavior adapts to the new condition.
I personally have minimal sympathy to either party in a rear-end collision created by improperly reacting to an impending red light. The leading car was in all likelihood not devoting enough attention to driving to execute a normal, safe stop, and the following car did not leave enough room to respond safely to the car in front.
