family volunteer day

November 18, 2009 | tommy | Leave your thoughts!

We got this information from Sue Franzen, Manager of HandsOn Tampa Bay:

This Saturday, November 21 is National Family Volunteer Day.  Sponsored by HandsOn Network and the Walt Disney Company, Family Volunteer Day is designed to demonstrate how volunteering is a great way for families to spend time together and make a postitive impact on the world around them.

It would be great if every family did something together on the 21st, but it would be even better if every family made a 05_hot_logosm150x150commitment to do something once a month or even once a year.  Volunteering over the holidays is what a lot of families like to do, but those that we help need our assistance all year long.

Your local HandsOn Tampa Bay has a list of ideas on the  Family Volunteering page.   Just make sure your ideas are not overwhelming for your younger children.  Look around your community and you will be surprised at how many ways you can bring a smile to someone’s face.

To celebrate Family Volunteer Day on November 21, HandsOn Tampa Bay (HOT) encourages Tampa Bay families to gather around their tables for our “Create an Incredible Holiday Card” project.  Provide paper, crayons or markers, stickers or stencils buttons, scraps of fabric, etc., and watch the creativity fly!  You can distribute your cards to your local fire house or police stations, neighborhood senior home or children’s hospitals.  If you would like your cards to go to the local VA hospitals, contact HOT to arrange for delivery.

HOT is trying to keep track of all who participate, so  e-mail or call Sue Franzen with the number of family members who participated, the number of cards made, and where they’ve been distributed.  A couple of lucky winners will receive a collector’s edition DVD of The Incredibles, compliments of the Walt Disney Company and HandsOn Tampa Bay!  Send your email to Sue Franzen at sfranzen [at] uwtb.org, or call her at 813-274-0999
