tbpac renamed for david straz

You may have heard that the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center has been renamed after David A. Straz, Jr. This guy donated a bunch of money (no one has said how much, but guesses are around $25 million) to the center in downtown Tampa, and in appreciation, TBPAC uh, errrr… DASJCPA officials named it after him.

Although the transition to “The David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts” will take some time, and the website still says TBPAC, they have already updated the wikipedia page.

The St. Pete Times tells us a bit more about Straz and the David A. Straz, Jr. Foundation.

I hate hate hate hate hate it that everything in Tampa has to be renamed after some rich person or company that can afford to slap his, her or its name on a big venue. I respect the wish to support culture but why can’t we commoners just be proud of our Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center? Why can’t we go to our very own Tampa Bay Stadium? I think we paid for it,after all. And the St. Pete Times Forum? It took me the longest time to figure out what that was! There were events I didn’t bother to go to because I thought I had to drive to St. Pete! And the Ice Palace was such a cool name. So instead of all these things contributing to the big picture of what Tampa Bay is, they’re reduced to serving advertising billboards or just boasting about how super wealthy one guy is. It stinks.
