out of the closet or out of touch?

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Last year the Tampa Marketing Company elected to join a number of business groups and organizations. Many have been interesting and have provided us with access to a lot of information and we’ve gotten to meet some very nice and productive people.

One of the groups we joined is the North Tampa Chamber of Commerce. We have been very disappointed in our membership there for a lot of reasons which I could put into a very long list, but rather than resign early, we chose to remain a member in good standing - at least until our dues expire.

Today we learned just how out of touch this group is:

“Show Your North Tampa Pride and Support the Chamber!” North Tampa Pride!

In celebration of the North Tampa Chamber of Commerce’s 60th anniversary, a commemorative “North Tampa Pride” T-shirt has been created. These colorful shirts are a great way to show your pride in North Tampa. All profits generated support the North Tampa Chamber.

Hey, we fully support GLBT rights, but we also know that the North Tampa Chamber has no clue as to how people in the community will interpret their new message. Or maybe North Tampa Pride is just different than the regular old Tampa Pride or Brandon Pride. Maybe.

Are they now supporting GLBT rights? or are they simply out of touch? Unfortunately, we know the answer.

tropical nights or sleepless nights ?

Monday, May 7th, 2007

The 16th Annual Silver Spoons and Sandcastles event to benefit the Mayor’s Beautification Program was loaded with hundreds of donated items for auction, plenty of great food, and wonderful drinks of all types. Rum mojiotos, special beers, Kahlua drinks and more awaited your selection. The auction items included jewelry , concert tickets, dinners, and special trips. Paintings, autographed jersey’s, plants, photography, use of an RV or a townhouse in Montana. What a great collection of auction items with all the proceeds going to support City projects and programs. Music and more. Everything and everyone was there!

Except the Mayor.

Listed in the program as the Host of the Event, Mayor Iorio failed to appear. City staff members apparently had been tipped off of her plans not to attend. When we asked what happened, the only answer we got was: she had been working late.

One staffer indicated that the city budget information received earlier in the day led to the schedule change. With the significant changes that might be ahead with a special session of the Florida legislature to look at property taxes, Mayor Iorio’s budget could be altered dramatically. While those of us at the Cruise Ship Terminal event were experiencing a Tropical Night, it sounds like your Mayor was heading for a Sleepless Night.

city council approves intown expansion

Friday, April 27th, 2007

With the approval of new designs and expansions, Old West Tampa’s Intown Homes will now be moving to build a total of about 150 new homes in the core blocks just north of the interstate and surrounding N. Howard and Armenia. A late night vote of the Council last night did not come without some serious discussion.

Intown President Ed Turanchik beamed with pride as he talked of his neighborhood commitment and efforts to improve the old West Tampa neighborhood. Almost 20 citizens spoke at the meeting and most voiced support of the homes and Intown’s efforts. The Overlay District/CDC group had recommended against approval of the expansion. Council member Gwen Miller was most supportive of the CDC’s opinion, but Council member John Dingfelder expressed it clearly that the CDC group and the City Staff were there to provide input and suggestions to the Council, but “at the end of the day, it is the Council that will decide this.”

Of special note at the meeting were the residents that expressed concern about being forced to sell their homes/lots or of being forced to make changes to their homes. Council member Charlie Miranda provided a fatherly type of reassurance to the public that they would only sell their homes if they wanted to.

Most of the controversy centered around the design of those homes with a flat roof that the Overlay District members did not like. Ed Turanchik’s presentation showed that this was not an uncommon roof design from the area’s past, but the main justification was the cost savings of approximately $10,000 per home by building a flat roof, making the homes more affordable.

Turanchik claimed that the Intown homes are the only affordable, energy efficient, environmentally green homes in Tampa. He further indicated that the energy efficiency level would save residents 40-60% on their energy usage - a significant number.

The offices of the Tampa Marketing Company are surrounded by the new Intown Homes and lots where additional homes are planned.

In my opinion, the area has improved significantly with Intown’s efforts and we believe as one citizen stated: “If you don’t like the flat roof, just don’t buy it. Let the marketplace decide.”

tampa: now where?

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

With the last of the Tampa City Council elections finally over, we can now move on to the speculation of just where the city is heading.

We have to discuss Joe Redner at the start. The interest that he helped garner in this race was significant. His efforts to focus on the environmental, transportation, and development issues were with vision and direction. The political baggage he carried as a “strip club owner” was repeated so often by the local media that his issues were usually ignored by the media and by the voters. Just as Al Gore is being recognized now with global warning, Joe Redner might be Tampa’s own harbinger of problems of our own making. We hope those issues stay in the front of public awareness. This was very likely his last campaign for public office.

New council members include Joe Caetano from the New/North Tampa area and citywide winner Mary Mulhern. Caetano has been an outspoken critic of the city in the past. While he has sometimes been a little too “out there” - suggesting New Tampa’s secession from the city? - his points about the need for more attention to District 7 is based on real needs and the abundance of tax revenues the area provides. Mary Mulhern is the new member to watch. She is progressive, open minded, and a newcomer to elected office. Her concerns for environmental related issues have been well articulated. While Charlie Miranda is newly elected, he has served on council before. His pet issues have addressed deteriorating infrastructure needs - roads, water, drainage, sewage issues. Additionally, Miranda is a strong voice for West Tampa, an area on the verge of a significant renaissance.

Tom Scott has a clear record of development issues and concerns about roads and transportation. Gwen Miller indicates she has heard the voters and will address more issues during this term. John Dingfelder is known as being someone that sometimes flips on issues, but it is usually because he has done continuing homework that has lead him to a different conclusion. His low key style has been one of his trademarks. Can he deliver needed goods and services for his district? Only time will tell.

As with many government bodies, Tampa’s City Council has frequently been split between the business / development side versus social concerns. Linda Saul-Sena has an acute sensitivity to historic preservation and a long term approach to city planning. She is outspoken when she has felt the need and is probably the most political member of the current council members. While she has sometimes not been consistent on development issues, she has been a tireless officeholder. With the failed election bid of Shawn Harrison, Saul-Sena may be the heir apparent for Tampa Mayor.

And speaking of the Mayor, Pam Iorio seems more enthusiastic about her second term than ever. She showed great pride of accomplishment at the recent announcement of Ikea opening a store in Tampa. Her plans for a mass transit plan, the riverwalk project - including the Tampa Museum of Art, financial restraint, and improvement of the neighborhoods remain to be realized - or not. She is a strong leader but has shown callousness on some issues. At an Ybor Chamber of Commerce meeting she almost openly challenged the night businesses of Ybor.

The decimation of architecturally significant Kiley Gardens in downtown appears to have come at her instruction well ahead of any reason to do so. She is conspicuously absent in the looming disaster of traffic issues on Gandy as the incredible rate of development proceeds SOG - South of Gandy.

However, she is usually a good reader of public sentiment and has been focusing more attention to the Drew Park, New Tampa, and East Tampa areas. Her understanding of the downtown core has helped lead to what will be an incredible downtown revitalization on a broad scale by the end of her new term. We believe you can watch for more direction of attention in the short term to the old West Tampa area as it starts to become increasingly significant to the downtown core. Tampa is one of the most exciting places in the US to be. Mayor Iorio has her challenges ahead, but we can’t think of anyone better to lead and direct our city. Along with the 2007 City Council, now the real work begins.

We thank everyone that seeks any public office. Your sacrifice of time, money, and more helps to shape our quality of life.

davis islands community news to change owners

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Community Publications announced today the sale of the Davis Islands Community News to Tampa Marketing Company. Davis Islands residents have been receiving their news on local issues and events in this local newspaper for seven years.

“Davis Islands is a perfectly located Tampa community that is frequently forgotten due to its ‘destination’ geography,” said Bill Sharpe, president of Tampa Marketing Company. “With Tampa General Hospital, the Peter O. Knight Airport, the Davis Islands Yacht Club and great restaurants and businesses, Davis Islands has a lot to offer its residents and surrounding communities.”

The Davis Islands Community News was founded in 2001 and was taken over by the current editor and publisher, Lee Medart, in 2003. While the April issue with Medart as editor has been distributed, Bill Sharpe and Tampa Marketing Company’s first edition will be issued in May 2007.

“With Lee Medart’s planned retirement, many Davis Islands residents have feared that their local identity might be sacrificed,” said Sharpe. “With the great community identity and discussions that she [Medart] has helped to create, we look forward to following her efforts through the continued publication of the Davis Islands Community News.”

Sharpe added that many Davis Islands businesses are frequently forgotten by the mainland residents and the Tampa Marketing Company hopes to help increase awareness of them.

The Tampa Marketing Company is best recognized as an internet and web-based marketing company with the sites they own or provide advertising sales for including TampaForums.com, TampaRacing.com, TampaGold.com, SOHOTampa.com and Sticks of Fire.com.

In addition, many of the Web sites have been recognized locally including SOHOTampa.com and Sticks of Fire as Creative Loafing’s “Best of the Bay for 2006.” Also, TampaGold.com recently provided web casts of candidates’ forums in several Tampa City Council races and the top five Tampa Marketing Company Web sites achieved more than 108 million page views with more than 1.2 million unique visitors in 2006.

“I have known Bill for over two years and he has done tremendous things to build a greater awareness of the SOHO (South Howard Avenue) area. He has been a member of our Chamber of Commerce, knows Davis Islands and will help to continue the Davis Islands Community News responsiveness to our local neighborhood issues,” said Medart.

The Davis Islands Community News is a monthly publication that is mailed to all of the residents of Davis Islands. The total current distribution is approximately 3,000 and Tampa Marketing Company’s plans call for a significant increase of distribution to more surrounding neighborhood areas.

ikea coming to tampa

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Rumors suggested Wal Mart would open a store at the corner of 22nd and Adamo. But, it was announced today that Ikea is coming to Tampa in that spot. Just a month after breaking ground in Orlando, Ikea will build a store in the heart of Tampa at the former Tampa International Center.

Back in January, Carl Cronan guessed it would be in Brandon, but the 353,000 sq ft store and their 1,700 parking spaces will occupy the 29 acres where you see a huge bunch of warehousing. Yeah - 350,000 square feet right between Palmetto Beach and Ybor City. It will be an interesting site.

Apparently those that buy the furniture and have experience with the company are gaga over the entire operation. There are even fan sites for the furniture store, such as Positive Fanatics and The Ikea Hacker. And even fan sites for singular items - a desk called the jerker, for example.

Of course, you can always buy the furniture on IKEA.com.

So - who among you have any experience with IKEA’s products?

tribune’s weak stomach

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

The Miller vs Redner Tampa City Council Race has sure generated a lot of interest.

Of course, the well known and controversial Joe Redner has helped bring real focus to the seat. When the St. Pete Times endorsed Joe, I was somewhat surprised, but when the Tampa Tribune endorsed Gwen Miller, I was shocked.

Only last week the Trib said of Gwen: “During the weeks leading up to the March 6 election, Miller provided at least three opinions on the property tax issue to the Tribune, the St. Petersburg Times and the public at candidate forums. She first said she would support a tax cut, then said she would not, then said she would wait for the state Legislature to develop a plan.”

In the endorsement they say: “Miller rarely takes a lead on an issue, but she’s done a respectable job and her voting record is solid.”

Seems to me they simply couldn’t bring themselves to endorse Joe Redner.

In today’s paper, the Tribune includes a very thorough article about the life of Joe Redner on the front page of the A section. The story is about as nice as you could get.

We have kept our Forum with Miller and Redner posted at TampaGold.com for you to watch and compare. For one hour you can see them handle questions on many topics. Have a look, then you decide.

district one candidates meet

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

Joe Redner and Gwen Miller met this afternoon for an hour of serious discussion on issues affecting the city of Tampa. Councilmember Miller displayed a good knowledge of the issues and offered unquestioning support for the programs of Mayor Iorio and the directions established by City Staff. Joe Redner raised clear questions as to her leadership and initiative abilities after serving 12 years on the City Council.

Panel member Ed Turanchik asked Joe Redner about his involvement in various legal efforts against the city and about his Joe and Gwen - together againadult businesses. Mr. Redner made it clear that he owned only one adult business - Mons Venus - and that he would not vote on any issues that came before the council regarding any adult businesses, although he made it clear he would speak up about those issues. He further stated that he has had no code enforcement or criminal actions against Mons Venus and that prostitution, drug use / sales, or any other criminal had never been tolerated at his club. Councilmember Gwen Miller said she would let code enforcement and law officers determine any of those issues.

In a question concerning the top three things that Gwen Miller was proud of accomplishing, the issue of purchasing Gene’s Bar was one, while Mr Redner indicated the city had other actions available rather than the purchase of the bar. Gwen Miller indicated her support in the renovation of the Babe Zaharias Golf Course was one of her best accomplishments while Joe Redner indicated she had failed to take any steps toward the providing of any mass transportation - light rail solutions.

The exchange between candidates stayed very much on the issues and we appreciate the candidates time and candor on the issues. We also thank our panelists for asking some great, thought provoking questions. Tampa Digital Studios provided us with a 3 camera crew and great technical team to make sure the forum is presented to you clearly audible with good visuals of the candidates.

Please take the time to view our forums (district 7, district 1), you will learn a lot about the candidates and the issues if you do. Remember to vote on March 27!
